About The Skunk

The scientific name for the striped skunk is Mephitis.  This small and furry animal can sure carry a lasting punch.  This little creature has a distinctive black and white marking down its back forming a large V-shape.   When provoked this V-shape could stand for "vacate" because they can leave a memorable lasting impression on your personal property.  Skunks can grow from 13-18 inches and can weigh anywhere from 2-10 pounds.  Skunks live underground or under your deck.  Skunks feed on caterpillars, insects, beetles, crickets, grasshoppers, mice, rats, and other small rodents.  Skunks have also been known to eat eggs, fruit, grain, and rotting flesh of other dead animals.  Skunks have few natural enemies.

Skunk Story

Fido the dog gets into a confrontation with a skunk.  Before it's sprays, the skunk gives Fido a warning by stomping it's front feet and hissing and growling, but Fido in no way is going to back down.   So the striped 13-18 inch annoyed skunk has had enough so he gives Fido a nice spray.  Fido's reaction is of shock and he begins to feel a burning sensation.  He runs home through the trap door shaking and rubbing his fur all over the carpet, furnishings and wall area helplessly.  Fido was not aware that this small mammal is equipped with a gland located under it's tail that produces and excretes an extremely malodorous oil called musk.  He was also not aware, that it could spray accurately as far as 12 feet.  As Fido's owner is driving into his driveway he notices that Fido isn't there to greet him as he opens the garage door.  Then the owner notices the foul smell as he approaches the house.  Once inside, the owner looks around and can't believe how foul this smell truly is.  The owner is now stuck with an interesting, but stinky predicament.
