Unwanted Decomposed Animals In Crawlspaces
What is it? dog, cat, rodent, skunk, armadillo, possum, etc. Who cares I just want to get the odor-out!!!
Given the proper conditions such as time, temperature and humidity decomposition begins to breakdown animal causing a severe protein odor and begins to invade your environment. I hope the following steps will help you recover quickly from this unfortunate disaster.
Finding the exact location of a dead animal in itself can be quite challenging. Patience and persistence will have to play a big roll here.
Along with the odor problem another consideration has to be taken by the fact that the area might have infestation of fleas and ticks. Never hesitate calling an exterminator to spray the whole area before entering to search out the carcass. Always wear protective clothing wear a vapor respirator, it's a must for safety. A good pair of chemical resistant gloves for handling the contaminated area and prevent direct contact with pathogenic microorganism or fleas and tick bites.
Now comes procedures steps and equipment/materials to take into consideration. Spade to shovel the carcass, heavy gauge-plastic garbage bags, chlorine bleach, EPA-Registered disinfectant, garden sprayer oh! yes! a good drop cord and a strong flashlight.
1.WHEN LOCATING THE ANIMAL: use your spade to shovel the carcass into your garbage bag also with the contaminated soil in the immediate area. Carcass remains can also be buried. If the decompose carcass is on the structure or other none removable area a washing down of the area is necessary after removing as much of the loose remains.
2. A complete washing down of all area and components can be accomplished by using 2% chlorine bleach solution (mix-household bleach 1:4 or 1:2). Another great product is FRESHX TOUCH OF MAGIC, CAN BE USED IN THE WASH DOWN process.
NOTE: chlorine bleach is a strong oxidizer and will rapidly decompose any remaining contaminants and must NOT be used with any other product or used where surfaces are not colorfast. Bleach is also a great sanitizing agent.
3. Now you want to saturate the area including surrounding area with a good enzyme such as FRESH-ZYMEX or with an E.P.A-registered deodorant such as any of your LYSOL disinfectant brand products found in most grocery stores.
severe cases consider using trigger sprayer or a garden type sprayer with plenty of working solution such as FRESH-ZYMEX enzyme 8oz bottle makes 2 gallons of working solution. This step is critical to the overall deodorization, be sure to spray these area's thoroughly.
4. Should any residual odors remain, repeat steps 2 and 3.
Remember to use plenty of FRESH-ZYMEX solution or Lysol disinfectant brand. We have found out that using a fabric softener with our enzyme product is very effective, 1-2-oz per-gallon.
If the small animal dies within a wall cavity inside your home or place of business or office locating the carcass becomes a challenge. If you locate the approximate area where the carcass is but it's not accessible (seek the aid of an experienced professional). It is always best to open the wall cavity and remove the carcass if all possible. Cleaning and deodorizing agents work best when in direct contact with the contaminated area.
